The armed offenders squad and police have found an "item of interest" after stopping a community probation van in Nelson.
Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly said the discovery occurred just after 3pm on Wednesday.
"Police assisted by the Armed Offenders Squad stopped and searched a community probation van on St John St, following information an occupant of the van could be in possession of a firearm."
Five people were detained, while the van was searched and the road was closed briefly.
"An item of interest was located and seized - it will be forensically examined," Comm Insp Kelly said.
