Two streets in a Waikato town were closed early this morning after lightning struck a tree, causing a fire.
Kauri St and West Parkdale St in Tokorora were closed just before 7am after the tree was struck, police said in a statement.
There is also a gas leak reported in Tokoroa, the fifth largest town in the Waikato region.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand have attended the scene of the fire with the help of police, according to the police statement.
People are being asked to avoid the area.
