Christchurch police are hunting for a man who robbed a service station armed with a claw hammer.

The man entered the service station on Blights Rd at around 8:20pm on Friday night.

He threatened the attendant with the hammer before escaping with cigarettes and cash, Detective Sergeant Mike Freeman said.

The man was last seen running down Blights Road toward Wairakei Road in the Papanui region of Christchurch.

"Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has any information about the man involved," Sgt Freeman said.

He was wearing a "distinctive" black cap with a white logo and was carrying a black backpack, which also had a white logo on it.
