A man in his 50s is dead after falling from a kayak in Tutukaka, east of Whāngārei, on Saturday evening.
Police say the man was seen struggling in the water at around 5pm and raised a distress flag just south of the North Gate.
Emergency services located the man, who was rescued by Coastguard a short time later in a serious condition.
CPR was administered, but the man died at the scene.
Police have extended their sympathies to his family.
