Nearly two-thirds of nurses in favour of new pay offer

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is moving on after online pressure forced it to release the results of its strike vote.

The latest offer was accepted on Tuesday. It was the fifth employment offer from DHBs and it brings almost a year of negotiations and the threat of further strike action to a close.

It included two new pay steps for senior nurses and midwives, a definite date for the implementation of pay equity, a commitment to implement the safe staffing scheme Care Capacity and Demand Management (CCDM) and a minimum pay increase of 12.5 percent by August 2019.

Nearly 65 percent of nurses voted to accept the offer, with 64.1 percent in favour and 35.9 percent against.

The previous offer vote had been split nearly 50/50 after 49.4 percent of members voted to accept the offer and 50.6 to reject.

NZNO chief executive Memo Musa said the organisation is now focusing on how to move forward.

"We are now focused on implementation," he said.

"The organisation is strong and growing and I am proud of the hard work of my colleagues, the delegates and members that have undertaken to achieve a MECA which lays down the foundations for a safer and rewarding career in nursing."
