Researchers say New Zealand should close its borders if there is a global pandemic.

A University of Otago-led study compared the benefits of continued trade and tourism, to the costs of letting in infections.

Lead author Matt Boyd says the clear economic benefits mean the decision should be a no-brainer.

"The benefits to the country are in the order of billions, if not more than $100 billion," he said.

Dr Boyd told Newshub that New Zealand is one of the few countries that could shut itself off, thanks to our remote location.

"Most countries are close to other countries and it's difficult to keep borders closed," he said.

Dr Boyd said we'd be wise to make the most of our unique location, but social implications would have to be considered.

The study was published Thursday in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.
