A New Zealand Navy ID card of a man assigned to HMNZS Tamaki has been found at Pearl Harbour.

The card belongs to Whanganui-born Nigel Vincent Foster, and shows his rank and naval number.

The Royal New Zealand Navy posted the card on its Facebook page, and were immediately flooded with comments trying to track down Mr Foster, who would be 73 by the birth date on the card.

HMNZS Tamaki was a training base from the Navy at Motuihe Island in Auckland.

It was purchased by the Government in 1872 and was a Navy base from 1941 until 2000.

It is now part of HMNZS Philomel, the Navy's main base in Devonport.
