Police are searching for a 23-year-old man after an elderly woman suffered a head injury in a violent bag snatch in Remuera.

The 80-year-old woman was approached by a man as she was leaving the New World carpark on Clonbern Road in Remuera on Tuesday.

During the struggle the woman fell to the ground and hit her head. She remains in Auckland Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are looking for Jaedon Dawson in relation to the incident.

The alleged offender got into a car which was waiting nearby and drove off.

Police attended the scene, along with an Eagle Helicopter, and found the vehicle involved.

The alleged driver of the car, a 25-year-old woman, was arrested and is assisting police with their enquiries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lloyd Schmid says the targeted crime was absolutely appalling.

"It is through sheer luck that the victim is not more seriously injured, but she and her family are understandably very shaken by what has occurred."

Dawson is described as being 178cm tall and of a large build.

He has numerous tattoos including the words "Respect Maori Blood" tattooed across his chest.

Members of the public with any information about the incident are urged to contact the Auckland City District Crime Squad on (09) 302-6557.
