A Wellington woman has revealed the impact of students taking intimate pictures of her while she worked as a teacher aide a year after the event.

A group of year nine students took photos underneath Hester Tingey's skirt during a maths class in March 2017.

The group used phones hidden in pockets and backpacks and then shared the upskirt images of Ms Tingey and another female staff member on a private Instagram group.

Both women involved resigned when they found out about the photos.

Ms Tingey told an Antworks Studio videographer a year after the event she's still anxious and she believes she always will be.

"I still have issues sleeping, I still get anxiety, especially when I see a boy in uniform or I drive past the school," she said.

"I still feel anxious and I think I will for a long time now."

The boys were all given suspensions following the incident.

Ms Tingey attended a restorative justice meeting with the boys involved and says she was glad they were able to get an idea of the effects of their actions.

"One of the conditions to the suspension was a restorative justice meeting with me which really gave them the opportunity to see how it had affected me on an emotional and a personal level," she said.

"I was really happy with that clause because I really wanted this to be something that they learnt from and not just be a slap on the wrist and something that they'd go on to kind of think is okay."

The school's rector Grahame Duffy, who was not in the role at the time, declined to comment on Tuesday when contacted by Newshub.

Stuff reports former rector Gerard Tully at the time told parents the incident had caused "considerable stress" to staff members involved.

We remain committed to developing within all our students the appreciation of, and respect for, the inherent dignity of each person," Tully said in a 2017 statement.

"In our particular environment, this specifically includes the appropriate and respectful treatment of women and girls."
