New Plymouth has seen heavy rain and strong winds for much of the day.

MetService meteorologist Tom Bell says Taranaki is a high-risk thunderstorm area and there could be more this evening.

An emergency services command centre has been set up at the intersection of Belt Rd and St Aubyn St. Anyone in need of assistance or a bed for the night is encouraged to make contact there.

Police and Fire will be door-knocking in the affected areas.
