Heavy rain has flooded an Auckland school, prompting it to issue a warning to parents about bringing their kids in.

Brookby School in south Auckland  posted a message on Facebook telling parents to "exercise extreme caution".

"The school is open for those children that are here. It is up to parents whether you are wanting to wade through the water to come and collect your children. They are all fine.

"At this point it may be very difficult for your children to get into the school grounds if they are not already here."

Earlier today MetService said a severe weather watch for heavy rain was in place across many northern areas of the North Island, as well as a strong wind watch for western areas of the South Island.

There's also the "broad moderate risk of thunderstorms" as the weather system moves over the North Island.

The early morning commute in Auckland was affected by heavy rain, with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) warning about "poor driving conditions and reduced visibility."

A Weatherwatch spokesperson said the main threat this week to New Zealand comes from a sub-tropical northerly moving across the North Island.

"The main rainy period in the northern and western North Island and western South Island will begin during Wednesday morning."
