Weather: More thunderstorms, heavy downpours forecast to hit

The North Island faces thunderstorms and downpours on Wednesday afternoon as unsettled weather continues to bear down.

Heavy rain and strong wind gusts could hit the west coast from Northland down to Waitomo, and part of the eastern ranges of the Bay of Plenty.

"A northwesterly airflow lies over much of New Zealand on Wednesday, showers or rain in the west and drier conditions out east," Weather Watch says.

"A period of heavier showers and possible thunderstorms are possible for the upper North Island in the afternoon.

"With so much instability WeatherWatch.co.nz cannot rule out further (isolated) tornado risks for the upper North Island on Wednesday."

The South Island wakes up to a chilly and frosty morning today, with snow showers in the ranges and scattered rain in the far south.

Snowfall warnings are in place for the Desert Rd, SH1, Lewis Pass, SH7 and Milford Rd, SH94, until 11am Thursday.

Thursday faces another surge of heavy downpours, hail and maybe thunder as the low pressure system moves over to the eastern side of New Zealand.

"This process could bring another burst of downpours with possible hail and snow may even affect the Desert Road for a time on late Thursday or early Friday," Weather Watch warns.

"Snow flurries are likely across the Southern Alps too and may affect Alpine Passes briefly."

But there is good news coming up later in the week.

"A big high is rolling in this weekend and should bring mostly settled, sunny and calm weather to many regions from Sunday to the middle of next week," Weather Watch says.
