Power has been restored to the National Grid after a power cut in Wellington affected over 12,000 properties for several hours.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused by today's outage," Trasnpower said.

The outage was caused by a fault at Transpower's Wilton substation.

People were urged to delay travel and take caution, with several traffic lights out across the CBD.

Parliament House and the Parliamentary Library were without power, and all Parliamentary Service staff were encouraged to go home early if possible.

Tours of Parliament have were cancelled for the remainder of the day.

Victoria University's Rutherford House on Bunny St was shut down by the power cut, and teaching was cancelled for the rest of the day. The library remained open with students told to follow the directions of security staff onsite.

Wellington's public transport network Metlink advised there was a power outage in Wellington Station. Services were unaffected, however ticket window purchases were temporarily "cash only".
