Abby Hartley's family donating leftover Givealittle money to charity

The family of the New Zealand woman who died after falling ill while holidaying in Bali are donating the leftover money raised to transport her home to charity.

Abby Hartley, 41, died earlier this month after falling ill on her first day in Bali, Indonesia, in August, while on her second honeymoon with husband Richard.

More than $237,000 was raised through crowdfunding site Givealittle page to help the family cover the medical costs and an evacuation flight. The family has now posted on the page, saying after all of their costs, they had $50,000 left over.

"We have decided as a family that we would like to split and donate the remaining money to various charities/organizations," the post reads.

"Time and thought has gone into this, and we decided to go with charities that were close to mums heart and ours."

The money will be donated to Starship Hospital in Auckland, The Mental Health Foundation and a Balinese school for children who have been rescued from traumatic pasts.

The post also thanked everyone who had donated.

"We couldn't have got as far as we did without all of the amazing support from everyone," the post reads.

"Mum adored kids and we know she would really love for a portion of this money to go towards kids in need."

The family explained how they are trying to get back to 'normality', saying "it's what mum would've wanted".

Abby Hartley was rushed into hospital at the beginning of August and underwent emergency surgery to remove a section of bowel, after doctors noticed a piece of it was twisted and dead.

But her condition worsened, despite a successful operation, as she developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), several infections, a collapsed lung and kidney failure. On August 15, doctors made the call to put Ms Hartley in an induced coma.

An insurance payout was declined by Cover-More Travel Insurance through Air New Zealand, due to her not disclosing a pre-existing bowel condition. The insurer has since remained quiet, opting not to comment on the situation.
