Armed police arrest man in Queenstown

A 40-year-old man is facing a number of charges following his arrest on Saturday afternoon in Queenstown. 

He was found breaking into a commerical premises in Invercargill on Saturday morning and fled the scene. 

Several hours later, police recieved information he was near Winton heading towards Queenstown along State Highway 6. Police did not pursue the vehicle but instead communicated with officers in the area who they lay road spikes near Kawarau Bridge. 

The man left his vehicle at Frankton BP and tried to steal another vehicle but was unsuccessful. He then locked himself in the BP bathroom.

Thirty minutes later, armed police and members of the Police Negotiation Team took the man into custody.

No one was hurt in any of the incidents.

He has been charged with driving in a dangerous manner and failing to stop for police.

He is due to appear in Invercargill District Court on Monday, and is expected to face further charges.
