A Napier community should expect a heavy armed police presence over the weekend, after an incident involving a firearm on Saturday morning.

At around 8:15am, a patrol car attempted to stop a car on Wycliffe St in the Napier suburb of Onekawa, police say.

The Mitsubishi Diamante sedan accelerated away from police, and while fleeing a passenger in the back of the car leaned out the window and showed a firearm to police.

The car was located on a property on Kelvin Rd, and a 24-year-old man was arrested, but not in connection to showing the firearm, which is still to be located.

The man charged was in breach of bail and will appear before the Napier District Court on Monday.

Armed police have been in the community throughout the day and will likely continue to be over the weekend to ensure the safety of the staff.

Police are pleading for anyone who saw the fleeing car or its occupants between 7am and midday to get in touch either directly or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
