The former owner of a pet food company has been sentenced to community detention for abusing calves.

Alan Martyn Cleaver allowed workers at Down Cow in Te Kauwhata, Waikato, to club calves.

He's been ordered to serve community detention, and his company has also been fined $90,000.

Judge Denise Clark told the Hamilton District Court there was no place for this type of abuse in a commercial premise.

"Blunt for trauma should only be used in absolute emergencies when no other alternative is available such as in some situations on a farm," she said.
