Canterbury and Otago brace for another blanket of snow

Spring might be here, but the snow is refusing to make way for the sun.

Snow is expected to fall over parts of southern and central New Zealand in the next few days, MetService said on Sunday.

It comes after residents in Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown and surrounding areas were all without power, following heavy snowfall across the region

Heavy snow is expected to fall over parts of Otago and Canterbury on Monday. There is also expected to be heavy rain for eastern parts of Otago and Canterbury Plains south of Christchurch.

Forecaster Ravi Kandula says the cold front will sweep north over the next few days, telling Newshub it's expected the snow will come "down to fairly low levels" once the front moves north.

"Cold south to southeasterlies are expected to spread over the lower South Island Monday morning, then spread northwards during Monday night or Tuesday," MetService said.

Warnings have been issued for Dunedin, north Otago, central Otago and the Canterbury High Country, where snow could fall as low as 200m above sea level.

Wellington may also join in, with the summit of the Remutaka Hill Rd expected to get a dusting of snow.

Last week, Newshub obtained stunning images of Arrowtown blanketed in snow, following a spring storm.
