A Christchurch teen has been jailed for three years for the death of a 65-year-old man with terminal cancer.

Moses Eli Hurrell, now 18, was jailed for three years and two months for the "cynical and callous" 2017 manslaughter of Pierclaudio Raviola, Court News reports.

The teen admitted kicking and punching Mr Raviola after he was invited into a house where a planned car robbery was to take place.

Mr Raviola was struck on the head multiple times with the stock of a shotgun. Hurrell punched and kicked him, dumped his body in a Sumner carpark and then went back to burgle his home, Court News reports.

Mr Raviola was found injured and later died in hospital of a swollen brain and skull fractures.

At the sentencing in the Christchurch High Court on Tuesday, the courtroom was told Hurrell wrote a letter to Mr Raviola's family expressing his regret and sorrow.

Justice Nick Davidson told the court Hurrell was exposed to solvents and alcohol prenatally and had his first alcoholic drink when he was just seven years old.

He went on to use synthetic cannabis and had been using it the night of the attack.

It was noted Hurrell had experienced violence and had been a victim of violence himself.

A psychological report indicated unless Hurrell's substance abuse was addressed in a positive way, he would keep offending.
