This weekend marks one of the first true signs that summer's on its way, with daylight saving kicking in.

Clocks go forward overnight, with 2am Sunday becoming 3am.

It's also a good time to assess your survival kits and smoke alarms.

Fire and Emergency NZ's Peter Gallagher says you should check the device's batteries - and that it's clean.

"Run the vacuum cleaner around it to remove any dust, because dust will affect its performance. And make sure that it's not too old," he told Newshub.

"If it's an old style alarm and needs a battery change, now's the time to change the battery. But if it's a more modern alarm, check that it's still within its use-by date."

Daylight saving was introduced in 1927, but the dates and times have changed a lot over the years.

Emergency plans and survival kits should also be assessed, he says.
