A five-vehicle crash in Wiri, southwest of Auckland, on Saturday night left several people injured and at least one vehicle on fire.

Police say the crash happened just after 10pm on Roscommon Rd, and was caused by a drunk driver who drove his car into a van.

Snr Sgt Jeremy Popping told Stuff the van flipped over two vehicles waiting at the lights in the "pretty spectacular" incident.

"A number of people have been injured in the crash and have minor injuries - however one person with serious injuries is being treated by ambulance staff," police said in a statement.

Traffic lights at the scene were also knocked out.
