Free buses, but not for everyone

Christchurch residents are being encouraged to hop on the bus on Saturday, because it's free.

Environment Canterbury is offering free bus services across the city to mark International Car-Free Day.

Stewart Gibbon from Environment Canterbury says it's also a chance to get feedback on their services:

"Are the bus routes good, are the buses good, what other ways could we offer public transport services in the future?"

Mr Gibbon says buses are finally returning to normal for the city, with most roads damaged in the quakes now rebuilt.

"What we've seen in the last 12 months is public transport returning to growth, which is a great milestone to get to."

Services in Dunedin, Queenstown and Taranaki are also free - and in Taranaki, were on Friday too.

There is nothing on Auckland Transport's website about free buses in the country's biggest city, though more of them will be on the road - replacing trains due to maintenance on the lines.

In Hamilton buses won't be free, but one lucky passenger will win an iPad.
