Green light for Christchurch Stadium with $220 million funding approval

The Christchurch City Council has given the green light to $220 million of Government money to fund a new indoor, multi-use arena.

Councillors voted on Thursday in favour to invest the money towards the stadium.

The decision was met by applause from the public gallery.

The money is a part of the Government's $300 million capital acceleration fund, which was gifted to the council in this year's budget.

The other $80 million of the fund will support the Avon River Red Zone green spine and transport and roading projects.

It was confirmed Christchurch would get a new roofed stadium in April this year, seven years after the 2011 earthquakes damaged Lancaster Park.

A business case for the indoor arena is expected to be completed by the end of this year with construction of the stadium expected to start in 2021.

The new stadium is expected to have a seating capacity of 30,000 and will be large enough to host major sporting and entertainment events.
