The motorsport community is in mourning following the death of a photographer killed at an event near Hanmer Springs.

Kevin Corin was covering the Royce Watson Memorial Rally on Saturday afternoon when a car came off the track.

MotorSport NZ president Wayne Christie says the organisation's thoughts are with the person's family and the all those involved.

"As with any incident of this nature, MotorSport NZ will undertake a full investigation into the incident, a process which starts with an accident report from Autosport Car Club officials, as the rally organisers."

Police are also investigating.

The Royce Watson Memorial Hanmer Rall  is a one-day club rally run on forestry roads around Hanmer Springs, named after a driver who died when he hit a tree in 2013.

Those inside the car were uninjured.

MotorSport NZ CEO Brian Buddsays deaths are rare - this is only the second in 35 years, following Mr Watson.

"It is a shock and it's very tragic," he told Newshub.

"I'm currently waiting for a detailed written report from the organisers of the event, and once that's received we'll start our own internal investigation into the matter."

He said rallies have very strict safety plans and Mr Corin was standing in a spot deemed to be safe, but "if there's changes to be made, we would make them".

'You will be missed by many'

Friends and colleagues left tributes to Mr Corin on his Facebook page.

"Kevin and I were always sharing skills to allow each of us to accomplish our hobbies," wrote Roger Nees.

"Recently Kevin re-invigorated his work in rebuilding his Lotus 7 and he would always still make time to offer assitance to us on our race car. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with his boys Finn and Tom at this very sad time."

"It was a privilege to know you Kevin," added Terry Deuchar. "You will be missed by many. RIP friend."
