Magnitude-5.1 earthquake rattles near Te Kaha, Bay of Plenty

A magnitude-5.1 earthquake has hit near the small Bay of Plenty town Te Kaha.

The quake, which struck on Monday afternoon at 4:20pm, was originally said to be magnitude-5.8, but was later revised to 5.1.

It occurred five kilometres south-east of the township at a depth of 45km, GeoNet reports.

It caused moderate shaking, with more than 2000 reporting that they'd felt it in the 15 minutes after the quake occurred.
