New Zealand universities are nowhere to be seen in the latest top 200 ranking from Times Higher Education, for the first time since 2004.

The University of Auckland (UoA), which was ranked at 192 in 2018, has now slipped out of the top 200 to be placed in the 201 - 250 bracket in the 2019 rankings.

UoA was the sole representative of New Zealand's eight universities in the Times Higher Education rankings Top 200, meaning there are now none.

The University of Otago did not move from its place in the 201 - 250 bracket. The rest of New Zealand's universities are ranked between 351 and 600.

New Zealand fared better in the QS World University Rankings released earlier this year, with the University of Auckland placed at 85 and the University of Otago at 175. The next best was Victoria University ranked at 221.
