Police are looking for a man with facial tattoos after a 29-year-old man died following an assault on Friday night.

The attack took place new the intersection of High St and Burcham St in Taita, Lower Hutt, around 7:45pm on Friday night.

One man, an associate of the victim, has been charged with assault and released on bail. Police are looking for a man seen leaving the area in a silver station wagon.

The vehicle was later found on Pringle St and seized by police for examination.

The man is described as Māori, of solid build with dark curly hair and facial tattoos. He was wearing a black top and pants. Police believe he may have received a facial injury during the attack.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw the incident, the station wagon leaving the area or any activity of note around the time of the attack.

It is also possible items of interest may have been discarded, police say. Police want anyone living on the surrounding streets of Burcham St, Macky St, Pringle St and Churton Cres to search sections and surrounding footpaths for anything of relevance.

The body will be removed from the scene for post-mortem on Saturday, but the examination of High St will continue.
