A notoriously dangerous stretch of state highway in Tauranga will be blocked by protestors on Sunday.

Dozens of locals will stand on Wairoa Bridge on State Highway 2 Sunday afternoon, pleading with the Government to upgrade the road near Katikati.

Fix The Bloody Road campaigner Andrew Hollis says decision-makers need to listen to locals.

"This particular road isn't suitable for cycling [or] public transport. The population is too small."

They insist there is no safety risk from standing on the road.

"Because we are protesting what's happening on the road - or not happening on the road - it makes sense to protest actually on the road," said Mr Hollis.

"We've engaged the local police and know there will be two squad cars there just to keep anybody who wants to get disruptive in line."

A crash on the road on Monday claimed one life.

The protesters say they chose Sunday to avoid disruption to motorists.
