Seal slaps Kaikōura kayaker in face with octopus

A group of tourists kayaking off the coast of Kaikōura have had a shock after a seal suddenly slapped a party member with an octopus.

The group of official content creators for GoPro hit the water to capture footage with the new Hero 7 camera when they spotted the seal, 7News reports.

It was having a tussle with the octopus and New Zealander Kyle Mulinder told 7News they watched it for a while.

"We were just sitting out in the middle of the ocean and then this huge male seal appeared with an octopus and he was thrashing him about for ages," he told 7News.

The seal and its opponent disappeared for a bit, but then it reappeared out of nowhere, whipping the octopus out of the water and right into Mr Mulinder's face.

"I was like 'mate, what just happened?' It was weird because it happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face," he said.

After the octopus has detached itself Mr Mulinder can be seen exclaiming in surprise while his friends laugh.

He revealed that despite the seal appearing more dominant in the fight the octopus was the winner at the end of the day, clinging to safety on Mr Mulinder's kayak until it was removed.
