Serial killer Hayden Poulter found dead in prison

The man labelled New Zealand's first serial killer has died, less than a month after he was recalled to prison for breaching parole.

Hayden Tyrone Poulter was found dead in his cell at Whanganui Prison on Saturday, NZME reports.

Poulter was granted parole in May and released in June, but was recalled on August 27 for breaching his parole conditions.

He was given a life sentence in 1997 for raping and killing sex worker Natacha Hogan, and stabbing to death sex worker Ladda Nimphet and her boss, Herbert Richard Norris.

He also attempted to murder a fourth person.

Poulter became eligible for parole in 2011 but was denied early release until this year.
