Stay away from 1080 drop, protesters told

1080 protesters are being asked to respect a legal ruling allowing an aerial drop in Auckland's Hunua Ranges.

The Environment Court has given it the go-ahead, despite resistance from The Friends of Sherwood Trust.

Auckland Council parks general manager Mace Ward says the drop will go ahead soon.

"We would hope that people who did take the court action would respect the court's decision at this time. From our point of view, it's about keeping our staff safe."

Security will be in place, staff mindful of past threats and actions.

"It is about taking a precautionary approach to ensure that we keep our operation isolated so we reduce those threats," says Mr Ward.

He asks people to respect park closures and keep an eye on pets.

The Hunua Ranges supply nearly two-thirds of the city's drinking water, and anti-1080 protesters said there was the possibility 1080 would contaminate water reservoirs.

But Auckland Council disagreed, arguing similar arguments against 1080's use had previously been dismissed by the High Court.
