A group of Auckland University of Technology students have been left traumatised after the lift they were in became stuck for two hours.

Stuff reports 14 students were trapped in the lift in a residential apartment building on Saturday evening and spent several hours unable to call emergency services.

A student told Stuff the lift unexpectedly began dropping, stopping and then dropping again after she entered it.

The group were unable to contact emergency services for around 45 minutes and people began to panic.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the building at 11pm and the students were rescued after two hours in the lift.

It's believed the stoppage was caused by overloading.
