A search and rescue operation in Hawke's Bay has located a missing surfer alive.

The man's friend sounded the alarm at the mouth of the Tukituki River in Haumoana at about 10:20am on Sunday.

Police said at the time it was not clear whether the surfer was actually in the water or changed plans without telling anyone.

He was located by helicopter 7.4 kilometres from shore on Sunday afternoon floating on his board waving for help. The Coastguard transported him back to shore.
