An Air Force Orion has found two men adrift on a boat in the Pacific, four days after two fishermen were reported missing in Kiribati.

Defence Force Commander Daniel Hunt says the crew on the surveillance aircraft were into their second day of searching for the missing pair when they spotted them on their five-metre fishing boat.

"We have not yet established radio contact with the men but it is likely that they are ones we have been looking for."

The Orion has called on two vessels in the area to go and pick up the two men. Help is expected to arrive sometime on Saturday evening.

The missing fishermen, aged 32 and 42, were last seen leaving from Kuria, a pair of reef islands in Kiribati's Central Gilbert Islands early on Tuesday morning.
