Police have launched a homicide investigation after being called to a school in Rotorua late on Friday night.

They found the body of a 22-year-old woman on the grounds of St Michael's Catholic School in Lisa Cres at 11:40pm.

Police are speaking to people who were in the area at the time, but would like to hear from anyone who may have heard yelling or arguing in the area, or seen anything suspicious, from 8pm onwards.

If you can help, call Rotorua police on (07) 349 9400 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The board of trustees at St Michael's School said in a statement the entire community is shocked at the discovery.

"Our school is a close and tight-knit christian community, and we know that all of our staff, students and their families will be as shocked and upset about this as we are," it said.

"Obviously, our first concern is the well-being of our students and their families. We would also like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families involved. "

The school is cooperating with police and more information about how the investigation is expected to affect the school will be released on Monday.
