An unknown vandal has caused significant damage to an archaeological site on Ōtāhuhu/Mt Richmond.

A 20-metre path was dug and a few trees were planted recently on the side of the maunga, exposing a historical midden site of shells.

It was reported by contractors on October 11.

Operations manager for the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, Nick Turoa, told Newshub the destruction of the site is disappointing due to the "huge spiritual, cultural, and physical significance" of the area.

He said he'd never seen destruction to this extent, although there have been a few cases of "trees being planted from time to time".

Mr Turoa said the path looked as though it was carved by a spade, and may have been intended for mountain biking or walking.

The path has been cordoned off, and restoration plans are underway to replant grass seed along the 20-metre strip.

Mr Turoa urged people to think before they plan to do something similar.

"If you see anyone on any maunga in Auckland doing this kind of activity, call the council hotline on (09) 301 0101."
