Auckland Transport avoids repeat of Monday's commuter chaos

Bus commuters on Auckland's North Shore had an easier run on Tuesday evening after Auckland Transport (AT) removed dozens of bus services in an attempt to ease gridlock.

Images posted to Twitter on Monday evening showed huge lines of buses waiting to enter Constellation Station on the first working day of the North Shore new network roll out.

The network change had provided greater frequency of buses on fewer routes, but led to three buses arriving at Constellation a minute faster than they could get out.

AT admitted the network had some "teething issues" and diverted resources to avoiding a repeat on the second day.

AT's Group Manager Metro Service Delivery, Stacey Van Der Putten, said the organisation would address the problem by removing 37 Northern Express 1 (NX1) services during peak times in the afternoon.

The organisation's media advisor, James Ireland, said that commuters should not expect significant delays to the popular route beginning near Britomart, and buses should show up as normal.

"It will probably mean a NX1 every four to five minutes, rather than every two minutes," he said.

AT also provided temporary traffic management at Constellation Station to help direct bus drivers.

The changes appear to have worked with social media users reporting no wait to get into the station in Tuesday evening.

"Awesome job fixing Constellation station [Auckland Transport] none of yesterday's chaos at 5.20pm," one person wrote.

"Constellation Station ghost town on way home today. Stark contrast vs yesterday," another person said.
