A judge told a Christchurch sex offender he had done "immeasurable" harm to his victims before sentencing him to 18 years in jail.

The offender sexually abused five girls aged between four and fourteen years old.

Prior to his sentencing in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday, the 51-year-old sent a letter to the judge where he refused to acknowledge the abuse and denied all wrongdoing.

In August, he denied all 33 charges against him saying the incidents 'never happened', Court News reports.

In an 11-day trial, the jury found him guilty of 28 of the charges of indecent assault. Indecent acts, sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and rape.

He has been granted final name suppression to protect the identity of the girls.

All of the victims, who are now teenagers, gave evidence during the trial.

The man's risk of reoffending was high and a rehabilitation programme was vital to his future and the safety of the community.

He will be registered as a child sex offender and will not be considered for release until he has served 10 years of his sentence.

He will not receive in prison treatment while he continues to deny his offending.
