Christchurch's first 'free store' opens

Every day, piles of cafe cabinet food end up in the bin but one Christchurch cafe owner is trying to change that.

Beth Hutt is the mastermind behind Kairos, Christchurch's first 'free store' where volunteers pick up unsold food twice a week from cafes, so it can be given to people in need.

Unsold but perfectly edible food is collected from 20 cafes across the city.

Little Brew Espresso is one of those cafes.

"If we've got a little bit of left over food, rather than us add it to our waistline we would just be interested in just sharing the love," Jo Little of Little Brew Espresso says.

The collection is all done on foot, ms Hutt and the volunteers lifting trolley's down stairs and across bridges to get the food back to Kairos.

On night one, they were overwhlemed with the amount of food they had been donated on what is traditionally the busiest day for cafes in Christchurch.

"I see Kaiross as being really unique as anyone can rock up whether they're homeless on the street or whether it's a guy turning up in a suit and an Audi," Ms Hutt says.

Generosity from the community helped to get this initiative off the ground.

RNP Homes donated the container the store operates out of and Grace Vineyard Church donated part of the land.

Ms Hutt was inspired to start the free store by the Wellington version that has been open since 2011.
