A Christchurch woman has admitted to the manslaughter of her partner on Christmas Day.

Franchesca Kororia Borell, 24, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Hardeep Singh at the beginning of her two-week trial in the Christchurch High Court.

Her murder trial will still go ahead, as the Crown believes her actions amounted to murder, Court News reports.

Borell's lawyer argues she did not have murderous intent when she fatally injured her partner when she threw a knife at his heart on Christmas Day in 2016.

In her police interview, Borell says she threw the knife at Mr Singh. The Crown argues evidence from a pathologist and mechanical engineer professor suggest a stabbing is more likely.

Borrell told police she and Mr Singh had argued on Christmas Day and she had started packing a suitcase, but Mr Singh blocked the door as she tried to leave.

She says she became angry at him and wanted to hurt him, so she "chucked" a knife at him so he would get out of the way.

Mr Singh later died in hospital due to massive blood loss from a single knife wound.

The trial is continuing.
