Dolphins play with paddleboarders at Auckland's Browns Bay

Dolphins frolicking in the sunset have provided a "magical" experience to onlookers at Auckland's Browns Bay beach.

Sonia Marouf took pictures and video of the dolphins launching themselves out of the water and playing near a group of paddleboarders on Tuesday night.

The dolphins hung around in the bay for some time, delighting bystanders at the beach.

Ms Marouf told Newshub she saw a person post on Facebook about the dolphins playing in the bay and headed straight down to look for herself.

"I'm part of the whale and dolphin watch page and we saw that a person had posted a message saying that they had seen dolphins in Browns Bay so we basically went down and we saw them," she said.

It was Ms Marouf's first time seeing dolphins in Auckland.

"I'm new to New Zealand and we've only been living in Browns Bay for a year," she said.

"Last time I saw them was when we were on the boat around the Bay of Islands, [I've] never seen them in Auckland before."

She said she's grateful to the person who posted on Facebook to let her know about the dolphins as she wouldn't have had the chance to see them without it.

"It was just a really beautiful, magical experience and I would like to thank the lady that who posted [on Facebook]... so we were able to go down and have this experience."
