Auckland firefighters say two people have escaped with their lives after a house fire in Takanini.

They were called to the blaze at 4:30am on Saturday, to find the house well-ablaze - but had a stroke of luck.

"Some neighbours or passers-by had broken a window prior to our arrival, and we were able to rescue on gentlemen through the window," said Papakura station officer Peter Rowe.

Firefighters entered the house and found another person, successfully rescuing them too.

One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

"This could quite easily have been a double fatality."
