A three-year-old boy has been left with a broken leg after being hit by a cyclist.

The toddler was playing in Dunedin's popular 'dinosaur park' on John Wilson Ocean Dr on Wednesday afternoon.

He left the park with his aunt just before 2pm, and was standing on the foothpath near the public toilets when a man on a bike rode into him.

The boy's leg was broken in the collision and his head and body were bruised.

The cyclist, a bearded middle-aged white man, didn't stop to help the boy or give his details to the child's aunt.

Local police want to speak with the man or anyone who saw him in the area. He is described as slim and about 170cm tall, wearing an orange or yellow top, orange or brown shorts and white shoes.

He rode a red or orange mountain bike. He'd come from the direction of Victoria Rd and continued up John Wilson Ocean Dr after colliding with the boy.

Anyone with information about the cyclist is urged to call Acting Sergeant Steven Wykes at Dunedin Central Police on (03) 471 4800, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
