Emergency services called to De La Salle College

Five people are in hospital after a BBQ gas canister exploded at a De La Salle College sausage sizzle.

St John and Fire and Emergency were called to the school in Mangere, south Auckland, just after 11:30am.

Three of the victims were students and two were staff.

There have been conflicting reports on the total number injured, but the school principal has now confirmed it was five.

The patients were of "various ages", St John spokesperson Glen Metcalfe said.

"There was some minor burns involved."

One student has received severe burns to the face.

Police are investigating and told Newshub it could have been a lot worse.

The students were working on a business enterprise project for their economics class.
