A large fire at Ports of Auckland in downtown Auckland has sent smoke billowing into the sky and left a worker injured.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson told Newshub the fire had broken out in a reach stacker, which lifts containers.

The plume of smoke was caused by diesel burning in the blaze, but it is now nearly under control.

Ports of Auckland spokesperson, Matt Ball, told Newshub the driver has some burns and has been taken to hospital. He could not confirm the extent of injuries.

Mr Ball said the port would be investigating what caused the fire.
