It appears a firewall stopped a blaze at a Motueka fish and chip shop from spreading to other buildings.
The fire started at KT's Takeaways on King Edward St just after 1am on Sunday.
A fire spokesperson said it took three hours to extinguish, and a fire investigator will be called in. The firewall stopped a panel and paint shop next door catching on fire.
There are no reported injuries.
Motueka, population about 8000, is 45km west of Nelson.
