A 20-year-old man has been critically injured at Gloriavale on the West Coast.

Emergency crews were called to the Christian community group in Haupiri just after 5pm on Tuesday night.

An ambulance spokesperson told Newshub the man was airlifted to Grey Base hospital. Police were aware of the incident, but say they were not called on to attend, Stuff reports.

No further information has been made available.

The secretive Christian community has been in the headlines recently after it was revealed community member Clem Ready assaulted his children.

His daughter Prayer Ready, who had down syndrome, died in June 2015 after choking on food. Her sister left the group after her death and told police about what had happened.

Ready was convicted for the assaults and sentenced to 12 months supervision in the Greymouth District Court in May 2018.
