'He let the firm down': Russell McVeagh partner resigns after misconduct probe

An unnamed Russell McVeagh partner has resigned after an investigation into inappropriate comments made under the influence of alcohol.

Russell McVeagh board chair Malcolm Crotty confirmed the resignation, which came after an independent campaign into complaints against him.

The probe was launched on September 24.

"A thorough investigation substantiates the complaints and the partner concerned has apologised and tendered his resignation," Mr Crotty said.

In a statement, Mr Crotty said the firm is "deeply disappointed" in the partner at the centre of the investigation.

"Our firm is committed to changing the culture of our organisation and we all recognise that change requires collective and long-term commitment. All partners in the firm agreed to uphold and lead the change.

"The partner concerned let the firm down, and we have now lost trust and confidence in him.

"The board determined that his conduct has fallen below our expected standards and we have accepted his resignation."

Mr Crotty said there is "no place" for inappropriate conduct at the firm, and it is "encouraging" that people have spoken up.

Russell McVeagh representatives have arranged to meet with the New Zealand Law Society over the matter.

The firm has been under intense scrutiny after it was hit with allegations of sexually inappropriate behaviour by senior employees in February.
