Kaipara mayor fears region overlooked after Tegel's farm plan axed

Cows will remain but the chooks are out after the Overseas Investment Office ruled Tegel couldn't build a mega chicken farm on land near Dargaville.

Some local residents said they were happy the project wouldn't be going ahead.

"Very pleased as bordering my daughter's farm but we do need industry in our town," a woman told Newshub.

"I think it's good that it's not going ahead because we don't need anything else around that's going to hurt the environment," another said.

One man said he couldn't see any problems if it was kept in a place where it wouldn't be an issue, explaining: "I can't see the big thing about it."

Tegel wanted to build 32 poultry sheds, raising nine million chickens each year.

The firm said it would create 34 much needed jobs but the OIO rejected the application  saying it was unlikely to result in substantial benefits or gain crucial resource consents from local councils after staff indicated they'd be declined.

Kaipara District Mayor Jason Smith is annoyed the Government didn't let the council see out the consent process which was still underway.

"There's a possibility but we'll never know now," he said.

He feels the region is being overlooked.

The Government is pouring tens of millions of dollars into developing jobs in Northland through the provincial growth fund but, according to Mr Smith, Kaipara is not getting a cent.

"Then you put this Tegel chicken farm decision on top of that, it's looking like central government is discouraging investment into Kaipara."

Betty Shine and others from a marae that sits next to the land Tegel bought fought hard against the plan.

"Feeling really good that the fight is over," she said.

She says the risks weren't worth 34 jobs, but agrees something needs to change.

"Don't forget about our young ones that are here, they do need employment."

Acting Regional Development Minister David Parker refused our request for an interview, but locals in Kaipara are hopeful the Government will hear their pleas.
