As it happened: Traffic chaos on New Zealand roads as Labour Weekend begins

Traffic on a number of New Zealand's State Highways has ground to a halt after a series of crashes and chases caused havoc on the roads.

6:50pm – A crash in Auckland blocked two right lanes prior to Rosebank Rd off-ramp on the north-western motorway. NZTA says the crash has now been cleared and all lanes are now open.

6:00pm – Traffic has built up on State Highway 2, northbound towards Upper Hutt. NZTA has reported "significant congestion" from Belmont through to Haywards Interchange to north of Upper Hutt.

4:50pm - State Highway 1 north of Wellington still remains closed between Plimmerton and Paekākāriki, NZTA has confirmed, and the road is not expected to re-open until mid to late evening.

The road remains closed, due to the dangerous materials spilled after a truck rolled earlier in the day.

The extraction of the vehicle and clearing of the lanes is a complex operation, said NZTA, and it's expected the SH1 will remain closed until 8pm.

4:20pm - Photos of the two men are expected to be released later today.

"Police do not tolerate this and the community does not tolerate this," said the police spokesperson.

"This was a significant event."

4:15pm - A police spokesperson has answered media questions about the car chase in Auckland earlier this afternoon, during a press conference.

The spokesperson said two men in their 20s will be appearing in Waitakere District Court on Saturday, after taking up to 10 shots at police during a Friday chase which resulted in traffic jams.

3:40pm – Auckland's Greenlane on-ramp has now fully re-opened after it was closed following a police incident. State Highway 16 is also now fully open, NZTA has confirmed.

However, southbound traffic on State Highway 20 is congested due to an earlier crash just after the Portage over-bridge. NZTA warns of heavy traffic southbound from Onehunga.

2:15pm – Newshub has obtained footage of the driver fleeing police in Auckland this afternoon.

The video filmed by a bystander shows the driver speeding down Dairy Flat Highway towards Orewa, followed by police cars with sirens blaring.

2pm - Over a hundred trucks are queued up following the truck crash near Wellington. Authorities are trying to turn around a number of those trucks back up the Kapiti Coast.

The Paekakariki Hill Road is said to be "absolutely chocca" at the moment.

The truck has been righted back onto its wheels with the help of several cranes and a decontamination tent has been set up near the accident site.

The chase began on the southern motorway and continued to Rodney, where it ended peacefully around 1pm.

Multiple offenders are now in custody.

No officers or members of the public were injured and police are not looking for anyone else.

Witnesses told Newshub they saw dozens of police cars in the area.

One witness counted 27 police cars passing Corinthian Dr around 12:20pm with sirens and lights flashing.

An ambulance followed close behind.

Police say more details will follow later on Friday afternoon.

12:45pm - Wellington's Remutaka Hill road is now fully open after a breakdown forced roads in the area to close for almost an hour.
